Michael Macioce has been practicing photography from Manhattan’s East Village since 1982.
A graduate of School of Visual Arts, he began fine art and documentary photography for the downtown music and art scene leading to over fifty album covers and culminating with the book Light & Dark. His access to the Lower East Side culture meant he had the opportunity to photograph many artists at the beginning of their careers. His artwork was then featured in their works. During the ’80s Macioce toured Europe with the band Shockabilly. In 1990 he traveled to India. These trips led to further impressions that were used for record and CD covers. In 1995 Michael began photographing the Lubavitcher Jewish Community in Crown Heights, Brooklyn for the exhibition “Jewish Ritual” at Lincoln Center, NYC in January 1996. This exhibit was part of John Zorn’s Radical Jewish Culture Festival. This work was featured on the covers of musical works of the “Klezmer Revival” in New York, throughout the 1990s. Beginning in 1994, Michael began teaching at Parsons School of Design and has taught photography at The New School for Social Research and The School of Visual Arts. In the late ’90s he began photographing NYC construction workers. This series is ongoing, titled Fuck Fear, Rebuild New York. From April to July 2010 his Jewish Ritual, musician and Lower East Side photography is part of a Radical Jewish Culture retrospective at The Jewish Museum for Art and History in Paris. In 2011 the exhibit moves to Berlin. Michael was a featured photographer in the 2010 New York Photo Festival as part of Lou Reed’s Hidden Books, Hidden Stories in Dumbo, Brooklyn.

It is not enough to make pretty pictures. It is rarely enough to be informative. Documentary photography should be fine art and fine art photography should bear a message.
All of us grow up listening to music. I have been photographing musicians and artists since I was fourteen years old. I would stare at record covers as I listened to the music and became driven to photograph for record covers. It is important for the artist to remain as passionate in their mature life as they were idealistic in their youth. An artist spins tales of the zeitgeist.
The purpose of a life in the arts is to enlighten. To deliver ones message in a beautiful and inspiring way.
